There is something quit magical about stepping into the quiet of a forest. The soft crunch of leaves under your shoes, the sunlight piercing through the leaves, and the vibrance of the green ferns, while listening to the birds.
My forest session is perfect for little kids who love to explore, climb, jump and gather little treasures.
Why a forest photoshoot might be the right one for your family ?
If you love the idea of an outdoor photoshoot, but you are dreading the late hour with your little kids. You worry they might be exhausted, grumpy and not willing to play along and be in the frame ? I get you Mum, and we all know too well how bed time can be stressful!
I have a lot of tips for sunset session which makes it work with little people, but if you are not up for it, then a forest session is the best alternative. Why ? because we will start early. We will still go in late afternoon but at least 2 to 3 hours before sunset, because we need enough light to come through the trees.
What to wear to your Forest family photoshoot ?
When planning your outfits for your forest family photoshoot, think soft and earthy tones that will blend beautifully with the background. In this session we did in August, Mum was wearing a beautiful flowy white dress with kaki Hunter wellington boots. Comfort and class at the same time, the best !
Dad was wearing a black trouser with a white t-shirt ( it’s easy for them , right ?!) and, to add texture and contrast, we used a brown jacket.
For the boys, we went for kaki - similar shades of green for a dungaree with t-shirt and a beige shirt with kaki trousers. Both boys were wearing black converse shoes. Comfort for shoes is crucial in the forest, as you want to enjoy the woodland and not worry about where you step.
The key here is to complement each other and not be matchy-matchy. You want to be in similar tones ( usually an earthy colours complement well the white dress of Mum). We want to avoid blue, red, pink, yellow, any harsh colour.
We let the kids explore
The forest becomes their playground ! I will gently pose you and prompt you but we will also let the moment unfold and let them play. These unposed giggles, muddy hands and curious glances are where the real magic happens.
These in-between playful moments keep the session authentic and relaxed. We want to capture their little personality as they are in the moment.
