A Newborn Photography Session in a Victorian House in London

Newborn photography at home… with a little more character

There is something about the first few weeks with a new baby that makes the world feel a little quieter.

Days and nights begin to blur together. You find yourself learning the smallest details about this tiny new person… the way they curl into your chest, the weight of them in your arms, the way their fingers wrap around yours.

And somewhere in between the feeds, the cuddles and the seemingly endless changes of clothes, life begins to look a little different.

These are the days I love photographing.

For this creative newborn photography session in London, I wanted to explore what an in home newborn session could look like in a space full of personality. We spent time in a beautiful Victorian house, surrounded by rich floral wallpaper, warm light, antique details and rooms that felt like they had stories of their own.

It was a little different from the typical newborn session you might imagine, and that was exactly the point.

Because newborn photography doesn't have to look a certain way. It doesn't have to happen in a perfectly styled nursery or a bright, minimal home.

It can be warm, artistic, a little moody and completely personal to you.

And if you love the idea of photographs that feel more like the pages of a beautiful story than a traditional photoshoot, this kind of session might be just what you're looking for.

A two week old baby and the beauty of those early days

Our little model was just two weeks old, right in that fleeting newborn stage when everything still feels so new.

I wanted the photographs to capture the connection between mother and baby, but also the feeling of this season of life, and how strong Mum was ( she just looked incredible, right !)

The quiet closeness of holding your baby against your chest. The instinctive way your arms find the perfect position to support them. The contrast between a tiny newborn and the woman who has just become their whole world.

We worked with the natural atmosphere of the house rather than trying to make every room look the same.

The dark floral wallpaper, the beautiful old mirror and the soft glow of the lighting created a setting that felt intimate and almost cinematic. Against those rich surroundings, the tenderness between mum and baby became even more striking.

There was no need for elaborate props or complicated setups.

Just a mother, her newborn and the connection between them.

Because when I look back at newborn photographs, it is rarely the perfect details that matter most. It is the feeling they bring back. The reminder of how small your baby once was, how they fitted so perfectly into your arms and how extraordinary those ordinary moments really were.

Your home doesn't need to look like a magazine

One of the things I hear from mums is that they love the idea of an in home newborn photography session, but they aren't sure their house is suitable.

Perhaps the living room is a little dark. Perhaps the house feels cluttered after welcoming a baby. Perhaps the nursery isn't finished, or there simply isn't a beautiful, light filled space that feels right for photographs.

And honestly, I don't want any of those things to stop you from having photographs of this time.

Your home is not a showroom. It is where your family lives, where your baby is learning the world and where so many of your first memories together are being made.

I work with the spaces, light and atmosphere available to create photographs that feel considered and beautiful, without expecting your home to look a certain way.

Sometimes that means using the bedroom, a favourite armchair or the light falling across your living room wall. Sometimes it means looking beyond the obvious and finding a completely different way to photograph your family.

And sometimes, as with this creative session in London, it means choosing a house that offers a different kind of atmosphere altogether.

Can you have an in home newborn session in an Airbnb or hired house?

Absolutely.

Your newborn photography session doesn't have to take place in the house you live in.

For this shoot, a characterful Victorian house gave us the opportunity to create something a little different. The wallpaper, the old fittings, the beautiful mirror and the warm interiors brought depth and personality to the photographs.

If you live in South London or Surrey and love this aesthetic, hiring a house or booking an Airbnb for your session could be a wonderful option.

You might choose a space with tall windows, beautiful architectural details, textured walls or interiors that reflect your personal style. Perhaps you love the look of an old Victorian townhouse, a country cottage, a farm, or a light filled home with beautiful wooden floors.

The space becomes part of the story, while the photographs remain about you and your baby.

Of course, it is worth checking that the property owner allows professional photography and that the space is suitable for a newborn session before booking.

I can help you think about the kind of setting that would work best for the photographs you have in mind, so the process feels considered rather than overwhelming.

And if you would prefer to stay in your own home, that is just as lovely. There is no need to hire somewhere special unless you genuinely want to.

Newborn photographs that feel like you

I am drawn to photographs that have a sense of atmosphere ( I have been moving away from the all white style, you may have noticed), but I never want the styling to overshadow the people in them.

For me, the most important part of a newborn session is how you feel with your baby.

You don't need to know how to pose. You don't need to arrive with a list of things to do. You don't need to worry about whether your baby will sleep throughout the session or whether you'll feel comfortable in front of the camera.

We can take our time, follow your baby's needs and allow space for feeding, cuddles and little pauses.

I'll guide you when you need it, while leaving room for the natural moments that happen when you are simply with your baby.

The result is a collection of photographs that brings together connection, beautiful surroundings and the little details you might otherwise forget.

And because every family and every home is different, no two sessions need to look the same.

Your photographs can be soft and simple, rich and atmospheric, playful or quietly intimate. They can reflect the way you want to remember this chapter.

For mums in South London and Surrey

If you are expecting a baby next year, or have recently welcomed your little one, you might be thinking about booking a newborn photographer.

Perhaps you have saved photographs you love but aren't quite sure how to recreate that feeling in your own home. Perhaps you want something more personal than a traditional studio session. Or perhaps you simply want to remember these early days with photographs that feel artistic and true to your family.

An in home newborn photography session offers the freedom to create something personal, whether that is in your own home or in a carefully chosen hired space.

I photograph families across South London and Surrey, creating relaxed, thoughtful sessions that focus on connection, atmosphere and the details that make your family yours.

You don't need to wait until everything feels settled. You don't need a perfectly prepared home. And you certainly don't need to have everything figured out before you get in touch.

You only need to know that these early days matter to you.

Let's plan your newborn photography session

Those first few weeks pass in a way that is difficult to explain until you have lived them.

One day, your baby will no longer fit quite so neatly into the crook of your arm. The tiny newborn clothes will be put away, and the details you thought you would remember forever may become a little hazy.

Photographs give you something to return to.

If you are looking for a newborn photographer in South London or Surrey and love the idea of a relaxed, artistic session at home, I'd love to hear from you.

Whether we photograph your family in your own space or find a beautiful hired house that feels right for you, we can create something personal to your family and this moment in your life.
