Why wearing a black robe might be the perfect choice for your Maternity photos ?

I recently rented this gorgeous black robe from a famous designer in London. One of my beautiful pregnant Mum kindly accepted to try it on during her Maternity session, and it was just PERFECT !!!

Now I hear you, my style is normally white, neutral colours, earthy tones, so why black ? All these are beautiful yes and I will always love capturing timeless memories with light earthy colours, but there is something powerful and unexpectedly elegant about wearing black. Especially with this black long robe.

Let me tell you more

1/ It’s effortlessly flattering

During pregnancy, your body is changing every day. The level of hormones going up is quite something, impacting your skin, your emotions and how you feel about yourself. It can be hard to love yourself and your new body. We have all been there.

A black robe offers just the right balance of coverage and shape. It hugs where you want it to and flows where you don’t. It photographs beautifully with any skin tones. It works especially great with matching black underwear and bra.

2/ It shows your strength

There is something grounding about black. It holds a quiet confidence. In photos, a black robe creates space - space to see the emotions in your eyes, on your face, the way you hold your bump, the way your partner looks at you.

3/ It works in both colours and BW

When I was editing my first images with this black robe, I fell in love with the way it looks both in colours but also in black and white. I love editing moody and adding some grain to make it look vintage.

4/ It adds drama

The contrast of a black robe against soft skin and a glowing bump creates such beautiful and emotional images. Soft window light, neutral backdrops, wooden floor, a cinematic look for your photos.

5/ It’s timeless

Black is a classic, like white. It will still be elegant and timeless when you look at it in 20 years time. Like white, it doesn’t distract from the main point of focus, which is you, your bump and your partner.

So, would you wear a black robe to your maternity photoshoot ?

If you are not sure yet, just know it’s an option you can try during your session. We usually can fit up to 3 different outfits during your photoshoot. I am always happy to help you style something that feels like you.
