The nursery. The name. The hospital bag. The growing list of things you did not know you needed to know. And somewhere in the middle of all of that, a thought has arrived :

“I want photographs of this. I want someone to capture this. Before it is over. Before I forget what it felt like.”

I am Claire — a maternity and newborn photographer based in Warlingham, Surrey, serving families across Croydon, Caterham, Oxted, Reigate, Bromley, Purley and the wider South London area. And maternity photography is one of the things I love most.

When is the best time for a maternity shoot in Surrey?

The sweet spot is between 32 and 34 weeks pregnant. At this stage your bump is beautifully full and round, you are still comfortable enough to move and pose freely, and the energy of late pregnancy — that mix of anticipation and wonder — is written all over your face in the most extraordinary way.

That said, I have photographed bumps earlier (especially if you expect twins) and later than this window (like at 38 weeks , right before she gave birth !), and beautiful images are possible at almost any stage. If you are reading this at 36 weeks, please do still get in touch — it is almost never too late.

What styles of maternity photography do I offer in Surrey?

Studio maternity sessions — in my warm, minimal home studio in Warlingham. Soft natural light, clean backgrounds, timeless portraits. Available year-round regardless of weather. It is my most favourite to capture and if you love what you see on my instagram or my website that the majority of the maternity sessions I capture.

Outdoor golden hour maternity sessions — in beautiful Surrey fields, woodland edges and countryside locations. Available May to September when the light and temperature make outdoor sessions genuinely magical.

In-home maternity sessions — I come to you, into your home, and document this chapter in your own space. Particularly beautiful for second or third pregnancies where home is already part of the story. If you have a gorgeous house, with lot of character, this is so ideal and meaningful. It gives a real lifestyle - storytelling vibe to your photos.

What should I wear for my maternity shoot?

This is the question I am asked most often — and the answer is always: less than you think.

The things that photograph most beautifully: flowing dresses in soft neutrals, wrap styles that move with the wind, a blazer and jeans, or simply beautiful underwear and your bump. The things I would avoid: structured workwear, busy prints, very dark colours that absorb the light.

If you are unsure, I have a full client wardrobe available — flowing dresses and wraps in cream, blush, brown, kaki and white that fit most sizes from S to XL. Many of my favourite maternity images have been taken using pieces from this wardrobe.

I also send every client a detailed styling guide before their session so you arrive knowing exactly what to wear.

How long does a maternity session take?

Studio sessions run up for 1 hour. Outdoor sessions run approximately one hour and a half, depending on the sunset— timed around golden hour.

There is never any rushing. We move at whatever pace feels right, pause when you need to, and I will always tell you honestly when I have captured what I need so you can relax and enjoy the rest of the time.
