Outdoor Maternity photoshoot - Golden hour sunset photoshoot in Kent

A Summer Evening in a Golden Field

There is something incredibly grounding about being outside during pregnancy.
The open space. The warm air. The way time seems to slow down just enough to breathe.

This outdoor maternity photoshoot took place on a summer evening in one of my local park between Surrey and Kent, just as the sun began to dip low in the sky ( usually 1h30 before sunset). Golden hour wrapped the field in soft light, tall brown grasses moved gently in the breeze, and a little girl ran freely alongside her mum… unaware she was already part of a story bigger than herself.

These are the kinds of sessions that don’t feel staged or forced. They feel lived in.

Why Summer Fields Are Perfect for Maternity Photos

A summer field offers a kind of simplicity that lets everything else shine.

No distractions. No stiff posing. Just space to move, breathe, and connect.

The tall grass adds texture and movement, especially at sunset, when the light turns warm and soft. It’s flattering, timeless, and incredibly forgiving — perfect for mums who want photos that feel natural rather than overly styled.

For maternity sessions, this environment allows:

  • Gentle movement instead of static poses

  • Natural interactions between family members

  • A calm, relaxed atmosphere that helps everyone feel at ease

It’s less about “standing still and smiling” and more about being present. This Mum wanted a picnic vibe as well, which was perfect with a little blanket and an F&M basket. I love that her little girl had brought her perfect teddy bear as well.

Including Your Older Child in a Maternity Session

If you already have a child, an outdoor session is one of the best ways to include them — especially toddlers or young children ( between 2 to 3 years old, when they have a lot emotions) .

During this session, the little girl was free to explore, run through the grass, and come back in for cuddles whenever she wanted. There was no pressure for her to behave a certain way or perform for the camera.

And that’s where the magic happens (quietly, naturally).

These moments — small hands reaching for mum, laughter carried on the wind, quick glances and shared smiles — tell a story of a family in transition. One chapter closing. Another about to begin.

Why Golden Hour Makes All the Difference

Sunset light is soft, warm, and incredibly flattering. It wraps around skin gently and creates depth without harsh shadows.

In a summer field, golden hour brings:

  • Warm tones that feel timeless

  • Soft contrast that suits natural editing

  • Movement and glow that elevate simple moments

It’s the kind of light that makes images feel emotional rather than posed.

Is an Outdoor Maternity Session Right for You?

If you’re drawn to:

  • Natural, storytelling imagery

  • Photos that feel calm and unforced

  • A relaxed experience where your family can just be themselves and play games with your little one

Then an outdoor maternity session may be exactly what you’re looking for.

These sessions aren’t about perfection. They’re about connection. About capturing this season of life in a way that feels honest and true to you.

Because this chapter deserves to be remembered — not just how it looked, but how it felt. Outdoor sunset photoshoot are one of my favourite to capture. Please contact me as soon as possible to lock your date in :)
